***RETRACTION***!!

A decent blogger should always check his or her facts before mouthing off about a particular issue. I got onto my soapbox minus the facts and for that dear reader I humbly apologise!

I had a few comments on the tie debate and decided I would just double-check whether my alma mater had indeed done away with the straw boater as I had assumed in my blog! Alas-and-the-proverbial-alak it is still very much a part of the school dress code! It is possible that not having seen a single pupil wearing one on my sojourns to Cavendish Square I automatically assumed they had been assigned to the dustbin of impractical school uniform accessories.

But this did lead me to another bugbear of mine. I was alerted to a Facebook post about a petition being drawn up to bring the "Transformation" agenda to my old school's Governing Body because there are not enough whiteys in key teaching and "oversight" positions. Now let's face it; the word "transformation" probably sits alongside the word “sustainability” as one of those words that is a bit like the straw boater and school tie – much maligned and abused!

“Transformation” is a word that gives cover to a hot-potch of left leaning, insufferable do-gooders who feel the need to “change” things that don’t fit with their rigid and jaundiced view of the world. It’s the sort of individual that needs a “safe space” at university to avoid getting offended in case they come across somebody who happens to disagree with their point of view.

I looked at the backers of this petition; admittedly with Facebook as my only reference point – and all I could find was a bunch of white kids who judging by their FB pics wouldn’t know hardship or discrimination if it came up, doffed it’s boater and said, “Hi my name is….” Guys, at least get a few token black faces in your tagged photos; that might add some legitimacy to your “cause”. “Hang on there, Hoddy that’s a bit unfair; we got a whole load of “likes” and “smiley faces” on Facebook, so there!” I say: “Whatevs.”

That said these libtards (as David Bullard a South African satirist so affectionately calls them) seem genuine and well meaning judging by the way they have articulated their case for “transformation” at my old school and they don’t want to burn an effigy of the headmaster on the First IX’s cricket pitch – yet; but I can’t help but wonder if all this energy wouldn’t be better spent starting businesses to further employment; working for charities to uplift the poor; becoming a lecturer or teacher to help those who wish to be educated; or take to the political stage where spouting endless soundbytes about transforming society is lauded by the masses – and you get paid for it!

So leave my school alone; like a cold Castle beer “it’s stood the test of time” and will continue to churn out productive and well-educated citizens (like myself) so long as the formula isn’t tampered with. As one FaceBooker commented: “Don’t try and fix what ain’t broken.”

OUT.
